cloud chamber

‹ Return to Your Donations at Work: New Research Labs

Installed in the Lab Commons to permit easier access by visiting groups, the large-scale diffusion cloud chamber makes the fundamentals of radioactivity come to life. Observation and measurement of tracks left by decaying particles in the chamber provides data for the study of elementary particle production, as well as ambient radioactivity measurements. This museum-quality device is the closest thing there is to a “planetarium” for elementary particle physics. Suitable for class demonstrations across the science curriculum, it is particularly well-suited for outreach to younger students. Mark Hannum, Neuroscience Lab Director and Science & Tech Division Head, is pictured exploring the chamber with students.
